Goodreads Description: The Grey Ones is the first book of The Path of the Maiden series. It tells the true story of a young girl’s quest for becoming ‘normal’. A path of trial and error and many lies. Through the light-hearted interaction between Yvonne and her family, the Occult mysteries and paranormal phenomena are explained in a basic easy to grasp manner. Learn alongside curious Mae about the Afterlife, the Auric bodies, and the different types of entities that visit us when we least expect it and much, much more…

I did not expect to like this book as much as I did. I was immediately pulled into the book by Yvonne’s writing style. Her writing is easy to read and follow, and the interactions between her and her family are beautifully written and come across as so real and genuine.
This is not my usual genre, it’s a cross between memoir and YA, but it works. It reads like a storybook, and that’s what makes it so interesting. The Grey Ones is definitely in a class of its own.
The book still needs a bit of editing, there are some grammar and punctuation errors here and there, but it doesn’t distract from the overall book. I would have liked the book to have been broken up in more chapters, but the structure definitely works.
As someone who believes in ghosts and the paranormal, this was definitely an interesting read for me. I recommend it even for sceptics, as Yvonne doesn’t hit you over the head with the paranormal. She does a great job of describing everything she sees and goes through and I am excited to read the rest of her journey.
Characters
There are many characters in this story, as Yvonne details many interactions between her and various family members. Each family member is very clearly fleshed out. We only see them through Yvonne’s eyes, but they are still unique and integral to the story in their own way.
I enjoyed reading Yvonne’s thoughts and experiences. My grandmother is Dutch, and I spent a lot of time with her in The Netherlands when I was younger. This book made me nostalgic about my own childhood in The Netherlands and made it easier for me to connect with Yvonne’s family as well.
Spoilers
I can’t exactly give away spoilers, as it is a memoir, but I definitely recommend that you go read this book.
