Q&A with Candace Robinson

Ink Pot

Inside the Ink Pot

Hello everyone, and welcome to a brand new section on my blog, which I’ve aptly named “Inside the Ink Pot.” This is where you will find author Q&A’s and other goodies relating to reading and writing. In my first author Q&A, I talk to Candace Robinson, author of Quinsey Wolfe’s Glass Vault, which released today (26 June)!

91r3OgVwTeL. UX250Candace is just your average hemiplegic migraine sufferer. Her days are spent writing, book reviewing and travelling through books. She lives just outside of Houston, Texas with her husband and daughter, where it feels like the hottest place on Earth with the crazy weather. No, seriously, one day it’s 30 degrees and the next its 70 degrees!

I hope you enjoy the Q&A! Make sure to get her new book here, and you can read my five-star review here.

Quinsey Wolfe’s Glass Vault is being re-released with Parliament House Press.

Q: Please introduce yourself in 50 words.

I live in Texas and it’s so incredibly hot. If only I could move to New Zealand or something! I like tiny trees, old TV shows, old movies, old eras—so pretty much anything old!

Q: What is your writing process like?

Firstly, I don’t outline. I pretty much write down scenes in my notebook and get started. By doing an outline, I feel like I’m wasting time because a lot of the time my story and characters change along the way. During the first draft, there is a lot of me thinking why am I doing this … this is terrible!

Q: What was your favourite scene to write in this book?

Without giving too much away, I’d have to say inside Snow White’s cabin where a particular reunion takes place!

Q: If you could tell your younger writing-self anything, what would it be?

Just write the darn book already! Quit waiting around!

IMG 7804Q: Which changes were made to the book for the re-release?

This one was a lot of small tweaks. Sentences were edited better as well. The biggest changes were more dialogue in the earlier chapters, discussions about the missing people. Perrie is also more determined in this one to find her cousin vs just trying to escape the Glass Vault. The upcoming final book, The Bride of Glass, actually has the most changes, though!

Q: As a writer, what would your spirit animal be?

Can it be an armadillo?

Q: What kind of research did you do for this book?

I already knew most of the stuff about Jack the Ripper because I actually did do a research paper on him in high school, but I had to research the victims again. I also had to look up Katrina’s name in Sleepy Hollow because I’ve only seen the Tim Burton one. So every time I think of Katrina’s character I just know her as Christina Ricci!

Q: What did you edit out of this book?

Actually nothing big in this one, mostly just areas where there was too much sitting around.

Q: How did publishing your first book change your writing process?

I had no idea what I was doing because it was my first book. I should also have done better research on editors.

Q: What is your favourite underappreciated novel?

I love The Sin Eater’s Daughter! Also, I love Natalia Jaster’s books, who is an indie author!
